How to obtain an employee residence permit in France?

You are eligible to apply for a residence permit in France if and only if:

  • You are a foreigner in France to work as an employee
  • You have a work permit
  • You have a long-stay visa equivalent to an employee residence permit (VLS-TS) if you are admitted to stay in France for the first time
  • The request for the card
  • The conditions associated with applying for the card are applied according to your place of residence: France or abroad.
  • I live abroad
  • When you live abroad, your employer must apply for a work permit online before you arrive in France. As soon as it is validated, the administration in charge informs the latter who alerts you. After confirmation, you can apply for a long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit (VLS-TS). Within 3 months following your arrival in France, you must validate your VLS-TS and pay a tax in addition to the visa fees (the tax is €200). You must submit the application for a residence card to the prefecture where you live, no later than 2 months before the expiry date of your VLS-TS. The filing procedure can be checked on the website of your prefecture. If your file is complete, you will receive a receipt that allows you to stay in the country while your file is examined.

  • When you are in France, your employer must apply for a work permit online. You must submit your card application to the prefecture where you live before the end of your residence permit. Check the filing procedure on your prefecture's website.
  • The documents to be provided

  • Valid long-stay visa or residence permit
  • Passport (pages concerning civil status, validity dates, entry stamps and visas) or consular certificate with photo
  • or ID card with photo
  • Proof of address dating back less than 6 months
  • 3 photos. If the request is made on the internet: indicate the code from the e-photo
  • Proof of payment of stamp duty (to be submitted at the time of delivery of the stamp)
  • Medical certificate issued by Ofii (French Office for Immigration and Integration) This certificate is to be given at the time of delivery of the title)
  • Copy of the work permit issued by the new employer

  • Work authorization corresponding to the position held

  • You are unemployed

  • Individual situation notice issued by France Travail
  • You have another job

  • or nationality certificate less than 6 months old with photo
  • Proof of address dating back less than 6 months
  • 3 photos. If the request is made on the internet: indicate the code from the e-photo
  • Proof of payment of stamp duty (to be submitted at the time of delivery of the stamp)
  • Medical certificate issued by the Ofii (French Office for Immigration and Integration) This certificate is to be given at the time of delivery of the title
  • Certificate from the previous employer intended for France Travail justifying the termination of the employment contract
  • Dematerialized work authorization issued by the new employer
  • Your file is also, you now have to pay a tax of €200 and €25 of stamp duty. If your application is accepted, you are summoned to the prefecture for the issuance of the residence permit.
    Your residence permit as an employee or temporary worker is valid for 1 year and is renewable.
